Sizing a PTO Shaft

Whether buying a new implement with a PTO shaft or replacing an old one, most PTO shafts need to be cut to adapt to the length between the tractor and the implement using it. This is the simple process we outlined in the following steps.
▎Connect the implement to the tractor three-point linkage without connecting the PTO.
▎ To determine the length of the required PTO shaft, it is necessary to measure the distance between the groove on the tractor PTO output shaft and the implemented PTO output shaft.
▎ After completing the measurement, we usually recommend taking an additional 75mm from the PTO shaft as a buffer to facilitate the connection. If there is no buffer, it may not allow any movement and damage the universal joint on the PTO shaft or damage the implement or tractor.
To help explain, we use the following example:
Length of new PTO shaft = 1000mm from head to tail.
Distance between the tractor output shaft and implement output shaft =800mm
Additional buffer =75mm
Therefore, in order to obtain our measurement results, we need to perform the following operations:
PTO shaft length – the distance between the tractor and implement +75mm buffer.
It is necessary to remove 1000mm – 800mm+75mm=275mm from the PTO shaft.
▎ The easiest way to cut the PTO shaft to the correct size is to divide it in 2 so that there are internal and external parts. The plastic cover does not need to be removed. In the above example, we need to remove 275mm from the length, so we need to cut 275mm and 275mm from the plastic cover and steel pipe inside and outside the PTO shaft. First, measure the required amount on the plastic power take-off end cover, mark it with words, and then cut off the excess part. Then measure the required amount from the steel pipe and cut it with a hacksaw or angle grinder. Repeat the above steps for the other half of the PTO shaft.
▍You need to make sure that all burrs are removed from the cutting end of the PTO shaft to make the PTO slide correctly. We also recommend that you apply some grease to both sides of the PTO before reassembly. After reassembling the PTO shaft, it can be connected to the tractor and implements.
